" I love painting tigers. They are so beautiful with their deep orange body color and black stripes. In this painting, the sun has just risen, flooding the setting with rich, golden sunlight. The foreground color complements the color of the tiger's fur. I have backlit him to give him a golden aura which contrasts dramatically with the shaded background. It's great fun painting such rich colors and a good excuse to get out all those lovely crimsons and siennas! I chose to paint this young tiger in profile because I just couldn't resist trying to capture the thick mane of fur on his neck. Although he's resting the expression on this young cat's face shows a mixture of curiosity and mischeif - he's ready for anything!" - M. Hillier
