"As I contemplated this composition, I felt a need to use some strong complementary colors in the subject matter. The regal canvasbacks seemed an obvious solution. The red/green and blue/orange combination seemed to bring this painting to life. I used the wave and foam patterns to lead the viewer's eye from left to right. The positioning of the ducks encourages the viewer's eye to re-circulate within the composition." - Daniel Smith.
