Night Moves - Cougar by Daniel Smith

"I've lived all my life in Minnesota, just south of the Arctic Circle, so it's no wonder that many of my paintings are of snowy settings. I have always been amazed at how bright a nighttime, snow-covered landscape can be when illuminated by a full moon. The snow is very reflective and helps to light up all of the surrounding elements. The cougar often hunts at night, since many of its prey species are nocturnal. A careful stalker, the cougar usually seizes its victim after a fast chase. I would imagine that cougars are more successful when hunting under a full moon. It's an eerie feeling to be in the wilderness at night after the moon has risen. Under the light of the full moon, all colors and values are much more subtle than they are in daylight. In this painting my only use of white is on the sparkles in the snow." - Daniel Smith.
