"As a dog lover and an artist, I am keen to explore the bond that exists between man and dog in my paintings, especially that of the working dog. The result is that the vast majority of my dog paintings feature working dogs. In many ways, the Border collie is the ultimate working dog. Without this remarkable animal, whole areas of upland Britain, renowned as sheep rearing areas, would be impossible to farm, even with today's technology. The setting is springtime in the Pennine uplands of Lancashire, my home county. This area is noted for its miles of dry stonewalls which are seen in the foreground." - S. Townsend.
