Standoff - Cape Buffalo and Lions by african wildlife artist Simon Combes
Standoff by Simon Combes.
It's early morning in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. The towering majesty of Mount Kilimanjaro is hidden by a mass of rain clouds heralding the end of a long dry spell.
A herd of Cape buffalo, plodding toward their favorite waterhole, suddenly catch the scent of their age-old enemy: lion. Mature bulls and cows range cautiously forward in a defensive line, shielding the young. Should they flee or attack?
The lions, after a long night of unsuccessful hunting, are also uncertain. Do they exercise discretion and slink away into the undergrowth? Or do they stand their ground hoping that the buffaloes will lose their nerve and run in panic, revealing a weak straggler who could be brought down in a hurry?
Each panel tells a story about life on the African plains; together, in the tension and drama of the confrontation between two powerful adversaries, they bring us the experience of Africa.
