Robe Signal - Cheyenne warrior scout by western artist Frank McCarthy
Robe Signal by Frank McCarthy available from Prickly Pear Galleries.
A Cheyenne warrior, wearing a wolf's head to signify his status as a scout, waves a buffalo robe to signal distant comrades. The robe served as a blanket to keep him warm, as a means to communicate from afar, and occasionally to stampede an enemy's horses and make them his own.
A buffalo hide served many purposes for the Plains Indian. It was a wrap by night. It went wherever its owner went, serving variously for warmth, protection . . . and for communication. A lone Cheyenne sends a message, a simple robe signal, to be understood as clearly and effectively by its receiver as our instant communications of today.
