End of the Season - Golden Retriever by artist Bonnie Marris

End of the Season by Bonnie Marris

"At the time I was doing this painting, it was probably the most difficult period of my whole life. My horse was dying, and at the same time, my dog had a stroke. Sometimes in order to deal with difficult situations, I paint throught those emotions."

Two weeks before her horse died, Marris had met this other dog, a golden retriever named Buffy, at a cabin in Montana. "I couldn't get her out of my mind," she admits, "because she symbolized all the loyalty, friendship, trust and bonding that you have with any true friend. Painting pulled me through a difficult period."

Marris' feelings are manifested in the title and it's meaning. "It occurred to me that there are a lot of good-bys in the world. There a good-bys to different seasons, and I feel sad when summer's gone. Here, the dog had spent the summer playing with the children. But now the kids have gone back to school, and the dog really doesn't have anybody to play with. It was a reminder that all seasons have to end, and a way for me to say goodbye to a really good friend."
