"In a little hamlet called Glenburnie in Ontario, I was hiking with my family and friends. It was a typical old, abandoned pasture, which is often a very good place to view wildlife. For some reason, this rock caught my eye. I was excited by its form and texture and by the little lichens that had created patterns on its surface. The translucent, golden grass formed a counterpoint to the solitary rock. I felt there was a quality and a theme in all I saw there. To me a subject such as this has as much interest and value as many shopworn, showy mountain scenes." - R. Bateman
