Late Winter - Black Squirrel by Robert Bateman
Late Winter - Black Squirrel by Robert Bateman
Published in 1986
"The Black squirrel is a color phase of the gray squirrel. It is possible to have black and gray babies in the same litter... I have shown this squirrel near a young red oak tree, possibly planted by himself or another squirrel. It is late winter; the snow is thick, hard and crystalline. The leaves often stay on all winter. The sun's rays have reflected off them producing a little circle of warmth, melting a slight pit. The squirrel may see this as a weak spot in the crust through which he can dig for an almost forgottn nut." - R. Bateman
