Approaching Masai by John Banovich

“No one likes having their afternoon cat naps interrupted...this male leopard has been disturbed by something in the distance. Masai and their cattle are fast approaching…a common story in a continent of over one billion people. There are fewer and fewer places for wild animals to find refuge. The human animal conflict has escalated to unprecedented levels and the animal always loses in the end.  I painted this cat in a pose as if he is being watched from below. It is an unusual position to paint but I wanted to capture a moment as if the viewer were invisible to his intense, distant stare.” - John Banovich.
