"The moose is among my favorite subjects to paint and to observe. I'm always amazed how the moose - an animal of impressive size - can move so gracefully and quietly through even the thickest of brush and trees.

 

"On numerous occasions, I've found myself within a few feet of moose in the wild - sometimes to their surprise, more often to mine. In this painting, I wanted the viewer to feel the tension and excitment of being close to the cautious bull, but not to feel threatened by its proximity - at least not yet.

During the rutting season in autumn, the bull moose can be quite unpredictable and, thus very dangerous. Here, the willows in the foreground - a favorite food of the moose - provide a very thin screen of safety between you and this giant symbol of the wilderness." - Paco Young
