Garden Apartment - Clematis and Sparrows by John Mullane

 

"I was at a Little League baseball game when the ball went over the fence, and I ran after it. The ball rolled under a split rail fence and seeing these birds with the flowers stopped me in my tracks.

"I went back later to do my fieldwork, and that particular day, the light on the clematis was perfect. I like to paint what I'm familiar with, and the old weathered wood, flowering vine and exuberant sparrows called to me. As a finishing touch, I added the names of my family carved into the fence post." - J. Mullane
