"I'm privileged to have near my home the largest herd of bighorn sheep in North America. In winter, when the rams are in rut, the hills echo with the clanging of their horns as they slam heads, competing for dominance. I know that people have been fascinated by bighorns for ages, because I find prehistoric petroglyphs of the animals on rocks throughout the area. In 'The Boys of December,' I wanted to give the impression of a cathedral or palace, the snow on the rocks and trees giving the effect of ornate architecture."
